BAMBOO REPUBLIC SPECIAL STAMP ISSUE

Antoon Versteegde is a Dutch artist who visualizes and builds large-scale constructions of bamboo poles using large rubber bands as lashing. Bamboo poles and rope lashing are used in the Bamboo Republic for scaffolding in the construction of multistory buildings but this is different. Mr. Versteegde designs art projects as large as Ferris wheels. They are all constructed by hand using many volunteers who must first understand the project and then be trained to fasten many bamboo poles to build the structure.

The works are all made and displayed outdoors because of their size. They are made for temporary display and not intended to be long term or permanent. Versteegde's construction method is easily passed on to people who want to help him build these wonderful structures. Only memories and photographs remain after the art work has been taken down. Of course, the bamboo poles and rubber bands can be used to make new art exhibits and that is exactly what Versteegde does. His projects have appeared in France (1989), Switzerland (1992), Belgium (1996), Denmark (1997), Germany (1997) and many sites in the Netherlands. He attended art school in the city of 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands, specializing in monumental design.

The Bamboo Republic is pleased to recognize the accomplishments of Mr. Versteegde with bamboo. His invention of rubber band lashing is a real step forward in temporary bamboo constructions. He is now an Honorary Citizen of The Bamboo Republic in appreciation of the positive attention he has called to the wonderful properties and possibilities of bamboo. As Chairman of The Bamboo Republic Arts Council I call on all bamboo artists to let me know about their work. The Bamboo Republic is pleased to recognize the pioneering work of Mr. Versteegde with this special stamp issue. We also honor the volunteers who help him in making the constructions. It is a stimulating experience for all - artist, workers and viewers. Many pictures of the Versteegde constructions are displayed on the Internet at www.versteegde.nl.
