Bamboo Super Circle
European Bamboo Society Great-Britain

European Bamboo Society

E.B.S. (GB) invites you to take part in the European Bamboo Society's annual meeting in Falmouth, 18-20 August 2000. Falmouth is in the county of Cornwall in the south west of England, and its gentle climate supports one of Europe's richest horticultural floras. Bring your family - Cornwall has a wonderful coastline, with spectacular rock scenery and beaches, and has always been a popular holiday destination.

Bamboo building workshop

A workshop that has a remit - "Bamboo as a solution for low cost housing with special reference to earthquake and disaster housing". Special attention will be given to the jointing of bamboo. It is hoped that by fusing together three different people with their own individual approach to bamboo joints will give birth to a new or at least improved "easy and efficient joint". A sea container full of Guadia atlantica cane will be available to build a prototype house frame in the gardens of Carwinion. This will be an instructional workshop to architects and builders from around the world.

Antoon Versteegde has a unique technique of jointing bamboo with elastic bands. With the help of the EBS participants it is planned to construct a giant bamboo wheel of around 10 metres in diameter. Active help will be encouraged to achieve this unusual structure. His workshops in constructing with bamboo have been used by company businesses to improve team working and leadership. Visit also his website to see more of his workshops.

The Bamboo Wheel of Versteegde

Visual artist Antoon Versteegde (1953) attended art school in the city of 's-Hertogenbosch, specialising in monumental design. Since then, he mainly seeks his artistic freedom outside the walls of established institutes and exhibition spaces, in public locations with free access for everyone. Versteegde conceives life-sized constructions, which in their spatial conception fit into his head, but not into his studio. For this reason, he designs and constructs temporary installations in situ, visualising the solidification of his imagination. For a brief moment, illusion thus becomes reality, allowing the public to share his experience.

Antoon Versteegde has gained ample experience by now with large-scale, interactive projects, and the material he usually works with (bamboo) has proven itself highly successful for realising large sculptures in a short time, working with groups of volunteers. His self-developed construction technique (connecting bamboo sticks with elastic bands) is easily passed on to people who want to cooperate spontaneously. His projects have appeared in France (1989), Switzerland (1992), Belgium (1996), Denmark (1997), Germany (1997) and a large number of sites in the Netherlands. The majority of Versteegde's works are temporary, and consequently have vanished. But you can still see them on the Internet: http://www.versteegde.nl

EDUCATIQNAL BUILIDING WORKSHOP in CORNWALL

The European Bamboo Society annual meeting is gathering bamboo enthusiast from Europe and other parts of the world. This year it is intended to have a bamboo building workshop with a remit for bamboo as a solution for low cost housing, with a special reference to earthquake regions and disaster housing. The house designed by Colombian architect Simón Vélez , will be build with invited participants ,such as architects, engineers, builders, from developing countries, introducing the recently approved German building codes of the magnificent bamboo pavilion at Expo 2000 Hannover.

Special attention will be given to jointing techniques, by bringing together 6 different experts with their own approach to bamboo joints, and by fusing together the main players and participants it is anticipated from this that some new jointing techniques can come about.

Dutch artist Antoon Versteegde will build with the EBS participants a giant wheel, using elastic bands to joint the bamboo lengths. This has proven to be a very attractive eye catcher and will guarantee international media attention.
Several well know authorities in the bamboo world have agreed to lecture on related issues and should make this to a unique event with a benefit to the developing South.
